The lake is called Xiangshuihu because a spring originates here. Plentiful water gushes from the spring which sounds like thunder. The sound can be heard a thousand meters away, so comes the lake’s name.
The Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty was constructed in this valley. On both sides of the valley, we can see the undulating and towering rocks, as well as the original style of the Great Wall. The view here is very spectacular, and is unchanged from years past. It is the same view that others saw many, many years ago. The Xiangshuihu Great Wall Section is less known among other parts of the Great Wall in Beijing.
We will leave the hotel at 8 am. In less than 2 hours, we will arrive at the Great Wall. After a 40 minute walk on a pathway, we will be on the Great Wall. Following another hours walk on the wall, we will reach the highest point of this section of the Great Wall. It is also the dividing point. Continuing in this section, you will find that the Great Wall is called “The Broken Wall”. Turning left towards the cliff, there is cliff art. (Chinese cliff art is a kind of ancient stone carving art, carved in the cliff. It could be the calligraphy, paintings or statues in the cliff). However, we cannot see it here. We will descend along the Great Wall, where some parts are an easy walk, and others are not. After about an hour walk, we come down the mountain to find the road. With another 20 minutes’ walk on the mountain road, we came to a small village where we will have lunch.
This section of the Great Wall is suitable to those who want to see the wild Great Wall with less walking as well as fewer tourists. The hike takes a total of about 3 hours.
