The Jiankou Great Wall is located in Badaohe Village, northwest of Huairou District in Beijing, approximately 30 kilometers from Huairou Town. It spans both Badaohe Village (northern section) and Bohai Town (southern section). To the east, it connects to the Mutianyu Great Wall, and to the west, it joins the Dazhenyu Great Wall. Due to the higher and steeper mountains in this area, this section of the wall is more winding and varied in its structure. The name “Jiankou” translates to “Arrow Nock” in English, as the shape of the mountain resembles an arrow, with the collapsed ridge forming the nock of the arrow.
We start at 8:00. After about 2 hours of driving, we arrive at Xizhazi Village in Huairou. We walk through the village and then hike for about 1 hour to reach the Due North Tower of Jiankou Great Wall. When we climb the tower, if you look to the west, you will see a breathtaking view of the Jiankou section ,if you look to the east, you will see the “Bull’s Horn” section.
After about 40 minutes, we arrive at the “Bull’s Horn” section. This part of the Great Wall is steep and dangerous, with small stones constantly falling. To stay safe, we will bypass this section by taking a detour path for 15 minutes before rejoining the Great Wall.
After another 30 minutes of hiking, we reach Mutianyu’s No. 23 Tower, where we can see the renovated Great Wall ahead. At Watchtower No. 20, we will have to climb over a one-meter-high wall because the gate has been blocked by the Mutianyu Great Wall Office.
At the end of the hike, you can choose to take the slide rail, chairlift, or walking path down. We will then take the shuttle bus to the parking lots and have lunch at a local restaurant. The total hiking time is about 4–5 hours.
The fees for the slide rail and the cable car are not included in the quoted price. You can choose to pay for them or walk down the mountain. The slide rail/chairlift costs 100 RMB per person, and the cable car is also 100 RMB per person.
