The Mutianyu Great Wall is located in Huairou District, Beijing, approximately 73 kilometers from downtown Beijing. It was constructed on the ruins of the Beiqi Great Wall under the supervision of General Xu Da during the early Ming Dynasty. In 1404 (the second year of the Yongle era), the Mutianyu Pass was established. During the Longqing era in 1569, Tan Lun and Qi Jiguang further renovated the Great Wall while defending the Beijing area. Today, the Mutianyu Great Wall is one of the best-preserved sections of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall.
We will depart from the hotel at 8:00. After about 1.5 hours of driving, we will arrive at the parking lot. From there, we will take a shuttle bus to the next parking lot, which is close to the entrance of the Great Wall. Then, we will go up to the wall by cable car, chairlift, or on foot.
Once on the Great Wall, we will turn left. It is possible to hike to Watchtower No. 20. For those who want a longer walk, you can climb further to Watchtower No. 23. This section is less crowded than Badaling or Juyongguan, making it a great choice for a pleasant trip. After exploring, we will walk back to the exit. The total hiking time is about 3–4 hours.
The fees for the slide rail and the cable car are not included in the quoted price. You can choose to pay for them or hike up and down the mountain instead. The round-trip fee for the slide rail and chairlift is CNY 140 per person. A one-way ticket for the cable car or toboggan costs CNY 140.
