The lake is named **Xiangshuihu** because of a spring that originates here. Abundant water gushes from the spring, creating a thunderous sound that can be heard up to a thousand meters away, hence the name “Xiangshuihu” (which translates to “Rumbling Water Lake”).
The Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty was built in this valley. On both sides of the valley, you can see the undulating and towering rocks, as well as the original, well-preserved structure of the Great Wall. The scenery here is incredibly spectacular and remains unchanged from centuries ago—it is the same breathtaking view that people witnessed many years in the past.
Compared to other sections of the Great Wall in Beijing, the **Xiangshuihu Great Wall** is relatively lesser-known, making it a hidden gem for those seeking a more serene and authentic experience.
We will depart from the hotel at 8:00 AM. In less than 2 hours, we will arrive at the Great Wall. After a 40-minute walk along a pathway, we will reach the Great Wall. Following another hour of walking on the wall, we will arrive at the highest point of this section, which also serves as a dividing point. Continuing along this section, you will encounter what is known as “The Broken Wall.” If you turn left toward the cliff, you’ll find cliff art (a form of ancient Chinese stone carving, often featuring calligraphy, paintings, or statues etched into the cliff face). However, this particular art is not visible from here.
We will then descend along the Great Wall, where some sections are easy to navigate, while others are more challenging. After about an hour of walking, we will reach the base of the mountain and find the road. Following another 20-minute walk along the mountain road, we will arrive at a small village where we will stop for lunch.
This section of the Great Wall is suitable to those who want to see the wild Great Wall with less walking as well as fewer tourists. The hike takes a total of about 3 hours.
