Introduction
The Jiankou Great Wall is located in Badaohe Village, northwest of Huairou District in Beijing, approximately 30 kilometers from Huairou Town. It spans both Badaohe Village (northern section) and Bohai Town (southern section). To the east, it connects to the Mutianyu Great Wall, and to the west, it joins the Dazhenyu Great Wall. Due to the higher and steeper mountains in this area, this section of the wall is more winding and varied in its structure. The name “Jiankou” translates to “Arrow Nock” in English, as the shape of the mountain resembles an arrow, with the collapsed ridge forming the nock of the arrow.
We depart at 8 a.m. and first visit the Water Cube and the Bird’s Nest from the outside. Afterward, we can buy sandwiches for lunch. We then drive for about two hours to Xishanzi Village in Huairou District. Making our way through the bushes and taking a right turn, we can access a section of the Great Wall that sees few tourists. (This route is only open in September and October.) This section is known for its challenging terrain, but we may encounter a few Chinese mountain hikers along the way.
At the beginning, there is a section where you need to stay close to the wall. This includes a steep slope with 38 steps at a 75-80 degree angle. Further along, there is a part called the “Little Potala Palace,” built on a very narrow mountain ridge. We descend the mountain via the Heavenly Ladder. The entire hike takes about four to five hours. Afterward, we head to our accommodation for the night, which resembles a guesthouse but is known for its delicious food.
Meals:Sandwich,Dinner
We start with a Chinese-style breakfast, such as pancakes or porridge. This is a hike not for the faint of heart. You will actually be climbing upwards for many parts of this section of the Great Wall. It is high and steep. It is not a hike to be missed! This can be a dangerous part of the wall if not guided around the safest spots to climb which this hike will do! We begin the hike after a walk up through the woods and then we will head up again once we are on the wall. There will be plenty of resting stops. You need a tolerance for heights on this hike and it is not suitable for children under 12 or first time walk hikers. The rocks are stable in most places and in some spots there are ropes for added stability (which most people don’t need). We will end the hike at the top of Zhengbei Lou and it’s a great view to see how high you came. Then you keep walking to the tower where is Mutianyu, it’s downhill from there for a well-deserved local lunch. For this hike you will need good hiking shoes and you might want gloves. You will get dusty and dirty on this hike. This is an epic hike that you don’t want to miss!
