The Eastern Royal Tombs of the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911) are the largest and best-preserved extant tomb complexes for royal families in China, and also the most important tombs for emperors and their women in the last dynasty.
Located in Zunhua, Tangshan City, Hebei Province, 125 kilometers away from downtown Beijing (in the west), they are devoted to 5 emperors, 14 empresses and 136 imperial concubines of the Qing Dynasty and designated as a historic site under state protection.
The 5 tombs for emperors, which are separate, are Xiaoling for the Shunzhi Emperor, Jingling for the Kangxi Emperor, Yuling for the Qianlong Emperor, Dingling for the Xianfeng Emperor and Huiling for the Tongzhi Emperor.
The other imperial women were buried in 4 tombs for empresses (such as the East Empress [Ci’an] and the West Empress [Cixi]), 5 tombs for imperial concubines, and 1 tomb for a princess.
Huangyaguan Pass of the Great Wall is located in the mountainous area of Ji County in northern Tianjin, and it is also the starting point of the Great Wall marathon.
We set off at 8:00. After approximately 2.5 hours of driving, we arrive at the Eastern Qing Tombs, one of the most imperial mausoleum complexes in China. Our first stop is the Yuling Tomb of Emperor Qianlong, the longest-reigning emperor of the Qing Dynasty. Constructed over 50 years, this magnificent tomb is designed in the shape of the Chinese character “主” (meaning “ruler”), featuring three chambers and four gates. The marble carvings adorning its walls and ceilings are of exceptional artistic value, including depictions of Eight Bodhisattvas, Four Heavenly Kings, small Buddha statues, and Buddhist sutras inscribed in Sanskrit and Tibetan scripts.
Next, we visit Dingdongling, the tomb of Empress Dowager Cixi, renowned for its unparalleled craftsmanship. A striking detail is the central ramp leading to the main hall, where the traditional dragon-and-phoenix motif is uniquely reversed—the phoenix soars above the dragon, symbolizing Cixi’s unprecedented power. The interior walls are gilded with gold leaf, decorated with bats (symbolizing good fortune) and the Chinese character for “happiness” (福).
Afternoon Itinerary
We then drive to Huangyaguan Pass for lunch at a local restaurant. This section of the Great Wall, nestled in the mountains of Tianjin’s Ji District, was a strategic military stronghold. Originally built in 556 AD, it was later reinforced by General Qi Jiguang during the Ming Dynasty. Notably, Huangyaguan serves as the starting point of the Great Wall Marathon.
Post-lunch, we proceed to Taipingzhai and hike back to Huangyaguan Pass. This restored section (rebuilt in the 1980s) features rolling terrain and steep staircases, offering a moderately challenging 2–2.5 hour trek along the ancient wall.
