When discussing the Great Wall, people often focus on the sections from the Qin, Han, and Ming Dynasties, overlooking the **North Qi Great Wall**. Dating back to 550 AD, the North Qi Great Wall has a history of over 1,460 years and originally stretched across regions now part of Hebei, Inner Mongolia, and Shanxi provinces. Today, the North Qi Great Wall is rarely seen in its original form. However, some sections have been preserved, as they were incorporated into the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. The section we will visit today is an excellent example of this historical preservation.
We set off from our hotel at 8:00 AM this morning. After about two hours of driving, passing by the scenic **Jinhai Lake** and **Yangzhuang Reservoir**, the **Ming Great Wall**—rebuilt on the foundation of the North Qi Great Wall and constructed with stones—will come into view. Since this section of the wall is not in good condition and has not been restored, we will walk along a path beside it, allowing us to appreciate its turbulent history. The Great Wall has stood tall through countless fierce battles throughout Chinese history. Along both sides of the wall, fruit trees bloom in spring, flourish in summer, and bear fruit in autumn, offering a unique and ever-changing landscape across the four seasons.
After a 10-minute climb up a mountain path, we will reach the original wall, which has stood for over a thousand years. Here, you can touch its weathered surface and feel its enduring spirit. About three to four hours later, we will arrive at the highest point of this section—**San Jie Bei**, literally meaning “Three Boundary Tablets.” This spot is particularly special in a vast country like China, as it is the only place where the boundaries of three provinces (**Beijing**, **Hebei**, and **Tianjin**) meet on the Great Wall.
After a 20-minute walk, we will approach a small mountain village where you can enjoy traditional homemade Chinese delicacies for lunch. Following the meal, we will return to downtown Beijing, concluding our memorable journey. This section of the Great Wall is especially cherished by those who wish to experience the original, unrestored wall and avoid more touristy sites.
