The Jinshanling Great Wall stretches approximately 10.5 kilometers, starting from Longyukou in the west and ending at the Wangjinglou Tower in the east. Located on the Yanshan Mountains, about 140 kilometers from downtown Beijing, it lies at the border between Miyun County in Beijing and Luanping County in Hebei Province.
The Jinshanling Great Wall is a complex and well-preserved fortification system, boasting the largest number of watchtowers along its length. These watchtowers, constructed from massive bricks, stand 5 to 8 meters tall and are spaced approximately 50 to 100 meters apart. Each watchtower features a unique architectural style—some are half-timbered, others are made of stone, some have one eave, while others have two. The roofs of the towers vary widely, ranging from flat and arched to quadrangular and octagonal designs.
This section of the Great Wall is often regarded as an exemplary model, earning the saying that “the Jinshanling section is the most essential part of the 10,000-li Great Wall.” Its robust military defense system includes barrier walls, crib walls, blockhouses, emplacements, watchtowers, stone-shooting windows, arrow-shooting holes, and cavalry defense walls, making it highly effective for defense.
When you stand on the Jinshanling Great Wall, you will be struck by its majestic and splendid appearance, gaining a deeper appreciation for the greatness and heroism of the nation that built it.
We start at 8:00 AM. After about 2.5 hours of driving, we arrive at the Jinshanling Great Wall. We then walk for 20 minutes to the Zhuanduokou City Gate Tower. From there, we hike eastward for 2.5 to 3 hours until we reach the East 5-hole Guard Tower, where we exit the Great Wall.
If you particularly enjoy this section and wish to spend more time here, you can continue forward for another 800 meters toward Simatai Great Wall and then return along the same route. Finally, we leave the Great Wall and head to a local farmer’s restaurant. The total hiking time is approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours
There may be many local vendors, often called “shadows,” along our route. They will try to sell you souvenirs like picture albums, postcards, and T-shirts. If you are not interested, please avoid talking to them or making eye contact. Also, do not mislead them by saying you might buy something later
